For someone who grew up in Rockaway and spent many hours in the water every day during the summer months, I always wondered what treasures were beneath the water. Those of you who fished regularly, knew the answer. For those of you who didn't, here is a great example of what may have nibbled on your toes if you ventured out too far!

Thanks to Jeffery Thaler, Class of 1962 for this great photo. This striped bass was caught less that a quarter mile off Beach 34th Street in about 35 feet of water and weighed in at around 40 pounds.
